Applications of LED Light Sources:
Where and how are they used?
LED light sources are used in a wide range of applications, from domestic lighting and street lighting to industrial and commercial environments. They’re also popular in decorative lighting such as Christmas lights and architectural illumination due to their versatility and colour options.
Types of LED Light Sources
LED Modules:

These are compact, pre-assembled units that contain multiple LEDs. They are designed for easy installation and deliver consistent light performance. LED modules are commonly used in applications such as signage, display lighting, and architectural lighting. They are also suitable for industrial solutions involving ultraviolet (UV) or infrared light, for example in material curing or enhancing camera visibility.
Chip-on-Board (COB) LEDs:

COB LEDs are a type of LED where multiple LED chips are mounted directly onto a substrate to form a single light source. This results in higher light intensity and better heat dissipation. COB LEDs are often used in applications that require high light output, such as floodlights, downlights, and industrial lighting.
What to consider when choosing an LED Light Source?
When selecting the right LED light source for a specific application, consider the following factors:
- Colour Temperature: Determines the hue of the light. Lower Kelvin values produce warm white light, while higher values give cooler white light.
- Luminous Intensity: Measured in lumens; indicates the brightness level. Choose a suitable output based on your application.
- Colour Rendering (CRI): A higher CRI provides more accurate colour representation.
- Energy Efficiency: LED light sources consume less power than traditional lighting.
- Lifespan: LEDs last significantly longer than many other lighting types.
- Dimming Capability: Many LED sources are dimmable, which is useful for specific needs.
- Application and Environment: Consider where and how the light source will be used.
With the right LED light sources, you can maximise the efficiency and sustainability of your lighting system, while ensuring a bright, energy-saving solution for any application.

Key considerations for industrial applications
In industrial lighting, for example, UV LED light sources can be used for water purification. In such cases, UV LEDs emit light at a specific wavelength. It’s important to be aware that UV light can be harmful to both humans and animals.

Tunable white LED light sources
LED modules and COBs typically come in a single colour temperature. However, some applications require multiple colour temperatures. This is where Tunable White light sources come in. These allow you to adjust the colour temperature—typically from a warm 2700K to a cool 6000K—using a two-channel controller.
Custom Power Supplies?
Old-fashioned incandescent bulbs would emit warmer light when dimmed. This effect is now emulated by Dim-to-Warm LED light sources. As the current is reduced, the colour temperature becomes warmer. For example, at 100% power, the light might be 2700K, and at just 10% brightness, it may drop to 1800K.
